THE GOSPEL NOTES
Thought for the day
As often, this story from Luke is one of the best remembered in the Gospels. Partly this is because Luke is such an excellent writer. Perhaps even more, it is because the story touches everyone. Untimely death is known to all of us, whether by illness or accident or sometimes by violence. We would love to be able to say to the bereaved, “do not weep”! But we can say it at another level: Jesus is the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep. This is our faith. He represents the God of the living, “for whom all are alive.” In him, who rose from the dead, our hope of resurrection dawned.
Prayer
Lord, for your faithful people life is changed, not ended. When the body of our earthly dwelling lies in death, we gain an everlasting dwelling place in heaven. Amen.
